Anthony Alexander, age 57, of Deer Park, was found guilty Thursday, March 30, of selling the opioid-laced pills under the guise that they were oxycodone, the Suffolk County DA said.
Alexander sold what he said were oxycodone pills to an undercover investigator two times in January 2022. Subsequent testing of the pills sold to the investigator revealed that they were fentanyl, not oxycodone.
Police arrested Alexander on January 20, 2022, at the Babylon train station. Investigators found metal knuckles and an assortment of pills, including oxycodone, alprazolam (commonly known as Xanax), and suboxone films (a drug used to treat narcotic dependence) on Alexander at the time of his arrest.
Opioid deaths have skyrocketed across the US in recent years. In 2019, New York State saw over 2,900 deaths involving opioid overdoses, the NY Department of Health reported.
Research gathered by the Fiscal Policy Institute shows also that as of 2017, Suffolk County had the second-highest rate of opioid deaths per 100,000 people in the state as of 2017.
After a jury trial, Alexander was convicted on the following charges:
- Third-degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance (three counts)
- Third-degree Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance (two counts)
- Fifth-degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance (two counts)
He will return to court on Wednesday, May 3 for sentencing and faces up to 30 years in prison.
